It's been one year from blogging. Nothing to shout of, unclepicks' profit stood at 6.37% for the last 12 months. The low profit was due to low exposure to stocks, about average $60k exposed to stocks, while the remaining sitting safely on FD. Based on $60k, the profit would be 10.62%

As for upcoming year 2010-2011, unclepicks will be more focusing on more solid counters. i.e. recent picks like MFLOUR and BJTOTO. This would better blend into busier lifestyle, to focus more time on other activities, while not affecting the performance of stockmarket investment.

Time to buy some BJ stocks. BJ* stocks have been in the downtrend ever since the ASCOT deal was pullback. The new IPO BJ retail has fall below IPO price. BJCORP also badly hit.

Amongst all the BJ stocks, unclepicks is picking up BJTOTO:

Good side:
1) Supreme toto has gone up to $32 millions. highest of all time. This should generate lots of revenue.
2) Stock price, drop from 4.6 to 4.1 recently. Low volume. People are not interested.
3) High dividend payout. taking year 2008, 25 sen ,about 6%
4) VT is buying back.
5) Defensive stock.

Bad side:
1) 6% to 8% tax increased.

Scomi Marine resumed trading today. Here's the highlights:-

1. Scomi Marine will dispose its 100% equity interest in CH Logistics Ltd, CH Ship Management Pte Ltd, Goldship Pte Ltd and Sea Master Pte Ltd into PTRT. (Dispose for RM550 million)

2. Scomi Marine will own a stake of between 20.63% and 24.55% in PTRT. (Currently 80.54%)

3. Scomi Marine may consider giving out a special dividend and invest in new business opportunities, given that its rich cash, which translates to about 75 sen per share for the RM550 million cash. (Also, to consider CH Offshore sale, RM348.7 million cash, about 48 sen per share.)

4. Scomi Marine will realize a loss on disposal of about RM433 million. (estimated, 59 sen per share)

Now, the stock price stood at 41.5sen during session break. Attractive?

Update:
- It is known that RM100 million loss of disposal came from foreign exchange losses.
- Analyst targeted 76sen, plenty of room to move up :=)

SCOMI MARINE, interesting roadmap ahead

Scomi Marine has disposed CH Offshore in the 1H10, and now the Indonesia's PT Rig Tender, together with a few more related subsidaries. Now, we are almost certain that Scomi Marine will be tagging with the strategic investors in Indonesia, and also to expand its business in India.

This is inline with the Scomi group's strategy; India will be the prime target for the group to expand its business.

The stock price has been moving south for many months due to one off writedown last year. Now, the roadmap is clear, NTA stood at ~$1.20, healthier balance sheet, a lot of cash for business expansion.

Investors would be interested with the current undervalued price, grab a piece of it. :=)

- If you are observant enough, the executive director (finance) of the Tanjung Offshore Services who has just resigned, acquired quite a big stake of TGOFFS. He has been disposing TGOFFS since December 2008.
- Lembaga Tabung Haji has purchased some recently.
- The company is already awarded 5 contracts this year,

What's my stand?

DOW JONES is moving forward with steeper momentum this time compared to the uptrend last year (see chart). Bernanke has reaffirmed his stand again last month that the interest rate has to stay low for a lengthy period to counter unemployment rate..

On top of that, DOW JONES will be releasing financial quarter reports next month. We definitely will be seeing at least equivalent good or better quarter reports.

Moving east to Asian countries, we see some measurements have been taken to cure these countries from inflation. In another words, Asian economies are doing too well for too long, and not going to wait for the western countries for recovery.

Back home, Malaysia hiked its Overnight Policy Rate (OPR) from 2.0 to 2.25 few weeks back. This step was taken to normalize the economy to calm down the strong economy growth. BNM expects a grow between 4.5-5.5% this year. Commodity like crude oil, cpo, rubber..etc. are back on high demand.

Well, we are still far away from the OPR rate of 3.5, which was steadily set before the economy crisis. OPR hike of just .25 is a long term remedy to slow down the economy growth. We won't feel it until a few doses being injected. (many months later...).

Unclepicks still thinks that the DOW JONES will further strengthen especially for the months of April-May, in conjunction with the quarter report releases. Also, locally, we will have New economic model (NEM) announcing end of the month. As usual, the big boss DJ will create a nice sentiment for the global markets to follow. Some small/mid caps in BURSA with solid fundamentals are gaining momentum, and quite attractive at the moment.

Let's hope there is no surprises, similar to Dubai or Greece problems happening in coming months.

Bursa raced for another +15 points last Friday after OPR was raised 25 basis point. Petrol subsidy system was scrapped. More good news are expected for the people, especially for East Malaysia as the Election is near ;=)

On the other side, DOW JONES has been slowly marching to the NORTH. Positive jobs data released last Friday added another +122 points for the DOW. Unclepicks is optimistic. DOW JONES has to catch up with the strong financial quarter reports released last month.

The current global correction should serve as an adjustment to bring the equity markets back to the fundamental. We might not be seeing another superb run like in year 2009, but a better(slower) and brighter(economy stability) future for everyone :=)

IRIS has just secured another RM259 millions project in Dhaka, a JV project with Data Edge LTd and Polish Security Printing Works.

Let's see if the market sentiment is good enough for IRIS to climb above 0.20 cent tomorrow. (Bought: 0.155 on 12/2009, TP: >30% gain).

Shelter on a rainy day

Highlights:
- U.S. ISM index continues to recover, at 6 year high.
- U.S. GDP rose 5.6%, at 6 years high.
- Obama unveil $3.8 trillion budget, record breaking deficit.
- US S&P 500: 78% of companies quarterly reports so far beat analysts' profit estimates.
- South Korea's export gain (47.1%), highest in 2 decades.

The world economy has rallied too fast and furious, and we are now looking at extremely good data. We definitely need tightening, interest rate hike, etc.

But, the bear is biting on the "tightening" as a reason for correction.

With these controls, we will still see economy improving at slower rate, and definitely not collapsing. The sentiment right now is at the fear side. At such condition, the stock market might take in the "tightening" as "bad bad news" aka "worst scenario".

The Shanghai Stock Exchange has dipped 10% from year-high.
DJIA dropped 7% from year-high.

Good opportunity to buy? Unclepicks will start to collect when time is right. Stay tune. :=)

Period of uncertainty, sudah potong?

During this period of uncertainty, unclepicks will not buy further, or sell further at the moment. There is no reason to be afraid of another slump like 2007 economy crisis.

Check this out, our Bursa is packed with lots of companies selling you at PE < 15. Who wants to put $$ into the bank with just 2.5% of interest????

Well, this is just another around of healthy correction (-5% to -10%) . Those TA investors are rushing out, just because the long awaited red sign (KLCI crossing the SMA 50 line) finally arrived.

Again, this is another opportunity to collect more, since the TA investors have left the game. They will definitely be back for next round. It might takes weeks or months. Be patience! :=)

The pre-CNY rally seems to be too short, and prices are not attractive to lock profit. No hurry, unclepicks will wait for next round.

China tightening again

China has been taking some measurements recently to tigthen/safeguard its country from asset bubble, rising inflation.

Today, we see another tightening on the bank lending, a move to slow down credit surging.

As expected, the SSE (shanghai stock exchange) and HSI (hangseng stock exchange) plunged.

Come back to our local market, Bursa dropped -5 pts at mid-day. The theme play remains intact with some SCORE counters and steel counters surging. (HUAAN surged 5%, look like the syndicates are not losing momentum) :=)

Bursa volume sustains at healthy region of 1-2 billions. US futures are healthy.

Bottom line: Stocks that unclepicks hold are fundamentally sound. If price is not attractive enough, why need to sell?

TAS Offshore, a gem or a sand?

There has been concern that the TAS balance sheet might be unhealthy, due to massive increase in trade and receivables and low cash on hand in previous quarter.

But.. but.. neither the stock performance nor announcement hints for unexpected events, like what LCL encountered.

Just recently on December 2009, TAS Offshore delivered eighth vessel to Zakher Marine. And now, crude oil price stood at ~$83.

At this bullish market, nobody is going to talk about the receivables, but the earning!

Unclepicks chose to hold till the next quarter report before planning for next action. TAS quarter report will be out real soon, previous quarter released on 19/10/2009.

The journey with LHH $$$$, thanks to speculators

You might be aware that unclepicks has not been picking up much stocks since 01 Jan 2010; the date when the rally started.

The reason is real simple, why buy when majority people are buying? No doubt, it's human nature to follow the crowd. But in stocks, you can't really be a winner, if you are just an ordinary people standing amongst the crowd.

So, what about Technical Analysis that tells you when to buy stocks? Technical analysis often comes too late, when they discovered the patterns of uptrend. The risk is a lot higher, as the patterns often show the gains of the past few days, which can be reversed easily. Not just that, some might be so stressful and have sleepless nights if the stocks they bought reversed.

Well, the bottom line: Technical analysis is for the full time techinical experts, and not for average joes like you and me.

LHH today went up high at 1.470, and came all the way down to 1.400. If you are buying today, I'm not sure if you are going to a winner or loser. The price has moved up so high but in so short time. However, one thing for sure, you are putting $$$ into unclepicks' pocket. :=)

Rodeo, the bursa bull game.

In a Rodeo game, the rider needs to stay mounted on the bull for at least 8 seconds while the bull attempts to swing off the rider. The timing of 8 seconds is crucial to determine the victory.

In Bursa, the investor comes and ride on the bursa stocks for a certain time/days, while the stocks swing up and down trying to get rid of the sellers. The timing is also crucial to become a winner.

How good can you time the market? What if tomorrow, the market goes down unexpectedly?

There is no such thing called, "perfect timing", but a "potential good timing" is what an investor needs. Besides that, the most important factor is to know which rider and bull has the potential to stay more than 8 seconds.

So, Cow boys and cow girls, are you ready to ride the bursa-bull?

Welcome to 2010. The pre-CNY rally has begun? Some stocks have rallied with > 5% gains in a day. Need to wait further to check if the rally is sustainable? Or need to wait for bad news for the market to pull back before buying?

TH and HUAAN

HUAAN price has gently dipped to 0.460 without much support from TH. If you take a closer look, TH has acquired the last 132,000 lots to make it a perfect 8.000% on 11 Dec. Since then, there is no further accumulation, and the price has started to shake and move south.

While TH might have completed its acquisition for the rest of the year. The big question is, is TH going to increase its stake next year? Without the support from TH, can HUAAN survive at current price?

HUAAN Outlook

Metallurgical coke price in city of Linyi, China has stabled at ~RMB1850 per ton since August till Dec 2009.( From external source).

As expected, HUAAN itself reported a stable margin of earning for month of Nov. (See attached pic)

From the price movement, HUAAN is in the consolidating stage with little volume (esp. without TH). Let's just wait until we can see some support before going in.

The ex-Prime Minister of Malaysia once said that malaysians tend to forget easily. "Forget" makes you and me change quite easily? From greed to cut loss? From cut loss to greed?

Look at the market, isn't it slowly dragging you to hell (i.e. Oil and Gas sector)? Are you seeing this as an opportunity or a dying market?

If you are fully invested, I bet you are now monitoring the technical indictors closely to trigger your cut loss.

As for unclepicks, unclepicks still have 60% $$$ to invest. The best time to accumulate is when the technical indicators crossing the danger lines.

Why not buying when people are selling? Look it from another perspecitve, any listed company has nothing change overnight(other than the stock price), when technical data (SMA, bollinger band, RSI) crossing the support or whatsoever lines.

Buy the stocks and wait for the technical investors to return. Unclepicks can wait for 3,5, or 10 years. Can you? If you are leveraged, please don't apply buy and hold theory.

Story about LTH and HUAAN

August to October
- HUAAN was staying at the healthy level, 0.50 - 0.55
- LTH gave support periodically.

November
- HUAAN slipped to 0.47, due to pressure from Mr. CHINA President.
- LTH came to rescue and injected so much that it could bring HUAAN up to 0.56, above 0.55
- HUAAN slowly recovering from the strong dose, and settled down at 0.49 - 0.50

December
- HUAAN again couldn't stay above 0.50, which LTH is comfortable with, and fell to 0.48. This time, the pressure came from Mr. Dubai and Mr. Santa
- Strong injection came in again recently, and the story continues...

SCOMIMR sharp fall

Some big players have been throwing SCOMIMR in recent weeks. Time to collect, to average down? No. Wait till these players completed their disposals 1st. Retailers who absorbed their stocks are not here to hold. (Speculators likely).

Two choices: 1) Wait until these big players to complete their disposals. 2) Safer way, wait for next quarter reports/news.

BURSA usually sluggish on December. And usually, the recovery only starts on New Year, before rallying for Chinese New Year. Will this happen this time around when we have more public holidays, especially in M'sia?

Well, today, unclepicks is going to pick another counter. But, it's going to be NOT so fundamental cyclical counter from China, "HUAAN".

About HUAAN
HUAAN is located at Linyi City, Shandong Province, China. Its principal activities are production and sale of metallurgical coke. (coal -> metallurgical coke) The metallurgical coke is then used as energy source for the manufacturing of steel. (Steel industry).

Why HUAAN?

   ~ back to BLACK.
   ~ latest EPS 1.65 is enough to sustain the current price.

A short note on MUHIBAH,
MUHIBAH quarter report was bad, reporting a loss of (2.36 sen), mainly due to cost overrun from its YEMEN LNG PROJECT. Reason given was that the project has to extend time, due to tough weather conditions. However, it's other divisions, especially crane (FAVCO), and shipyard are doing above expectation $$. Also, the Yemen project is at final completion stage. The loss should be contained in FY2009, according to report. As the risks of MUHIBAH has increased, unclepicks will not collect more, but hold on with the existing holding.

At time of blogging, US future up ~53 pts, Europe markets up 1-2%. Dubai dust clearing?

Bursa View: The Dubai Effect

I bet you guys have already known well about the DUBAI news. In short, a Dubai state-owned conglomerate (Dubai World) has asked to defer some of its total debts of $59 billions loan repayments for 6 months. Unclepicks is not going to talk more about the boring story of the news(it's everywhere!), but what's the next thing to do.

Analysis
Thursday, world markets dipped, ~ -3%
Friday, europe markets recovered, some even up 1.6 %
Friday, DOW JONES closed at -1.48%, recovered from opening ~ -2.2 %

From the above data, we can expect that the markets can absorb the DUBAI news, without over aggressive correction or panic. We can expect that asian markets to follow europe's recovery during Monday open. (not for KLSE that escaped thursday's fall) :=)

Next
But but, aren't that we are expecting a major correction, yet the markets have been moving sideline for months? So, we are going to experience a major correction in coming weeks, for real?

Unclepicks might dispose half of the ytlpowr-wb, and use the cash to collect other stocks ( stocks/sectors that indirectly dip by DUBAI news).

At the same time, please keep your cash vs stocks ratio healthy. We are going sideline, or slow-downturn for the next few weeks or months.

Unclepicks currently has only 47% of stocks. Out of 47% , 21% of stocks (YTLPOWR) is defensive stock , which can be disposed easily. Ideally, 35% stocks is perfect at this time.

Warren Buffet once said, "We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful."

Collect all the way down (fearful), or up (greedy)? You can try to ask people around, majority people will tell you to stay away during downturn. Doesn't that contradict with what Warren Buffet is saying? Are you a better investor or Warren Buffet?

Portfolio Review: YTLPOWR YTLPOWR-WB LHH and other Oil n Gas counters

At time of blogging, YTLPOWR mother and son, up slowly(2.24, 0.99) but definitely. LHH up(1.140). :=)

How about the other 3 Oil and Gas stocks in my portfolio? Crude oil has been in the down trend, (down from $81 to $76 ). Be patient, it's just a matter of time for them to rise again. Look at how Unclepicks collects YTLPOWR and how unclepicks collects Oil and Gas stocks. (in fact, going to collect more Oil and Gas!). Oil and Gas counters are considered hot picks, also investor's favorite, especially for oil producer country like Malaysia. Buy slowly along the dip and wait for the sentiment to come back.( Have you forgotten the Oil peak is somewhere around $150).

Let's dig into the history of oil. In 1956, M. King Hubbert suggested that oil production is bell-shaped like, and he predicted oil peak in year ~2020. To confirm his theory, unclepicks attached alaska oil production (peak:1988) and mexican oil production(peak:2004). Look at both the graphs, are you seeing what I am seeing? Bell-shaped graphs! If Hubbert is correct, we should see world oil production drop exponentially in about 10 years from now.

As long as oil price stays above $60 per barrel, there is no problem for these oil and gas companies to make reasonable profit.(In fact, handsome profit in future)

Unclepicks is here to stay at least for the next 30 years(est. average life span). Looking forward to witness M. King Hubbert's theory.

YTLPOWR/YTLPOWR-WB, accounted for almost 50% of total stocks purchased.
Latest quarter's profit (3.93sen) inline with my expectation. Not just that! YTL's wimax is teaming up with TM to roll out 4G nationwide next year.

“The 15-year agreement inked by the two brands will enable YTL Com to leverage on TM’s nationwide Wholesale Ethernet services while riding on the high speed broadband (HSBB) infrastructure"

This indeed a smart move. (yes! YTLPOWR is involved in YTL's WIMAX project too). At least, we know that it is going to be a lot faster than P1 Wimax.

When you have a high reputation gigantic company, joint with the most experienced broadband company, what is the outcome? Can YTL com be another MAXIS in future?

- Penny stocks trend extends to technology stocks/red chips, no sign of giving up.
- Bluechips reluctant to fall below current level.
- Overall sentiment improving, more quarter results releasing next week.

DOW JONES closed above 10,000 pts
CHINA's revised GDP signals for further upside.

It was a exciting week for BURSA. Good and bad news were released and flooded the markets every alternate day. Markets reacted like a "tail chaser dog", chasing the directions without any destinations. At the end of the week, investors rather chose a "smarter way" by simply putting the drama aside. Then, come along more retail investors to join the game of penny stocks.

The sentiment is now improved, and there might be another rally led by the techonology stocks and red chips(i.e. HUAAN might go back to the black after 3 consecutive quarters of negative). Unclepicks is considering to increase his stocks holding to ~30%

Though unclepicks does not really like the penny stock led rally, as these stocks are highly speculated, and far from fundamental ground (not sustainable), this does not mean don't buy! Unclepicks is always the same; pick the gems, buy little at one time and control your holding of stocks! Remember, you gotta follow the market, you are not the boss.

Look at MUHIBBAH's business
- construction and concession (Commodity is improving)
- crane and marine ( Oil and Gas, performed well)
- The lost on 4Q08 was a one off kitchen-sinking exercise
- PE ~7.5, cheap cheap for a company like MUHIBAH
- EPF collecting.

At a bargain price of 1.150, buy and hold :=)

With the purchase of MUHIBAH, my stocks vs cash ratio stood at ~23% vs ~77%. Enough for now.

SCOMIMR quarter results posted yesterday. Let me explain this in layman's terms.

Look at the quarter report:
NTA -> Company Asset -> all the way up 1.22 to 1.40 -> larger company now compared to 3 years ago
Quarter repot -> Profit -> Improving 1.45 to 3.48 -> making more $$$ now compared to 3 years ago
Revenue -> Total Sold Products -> Sustainable -> business as usual for the last 3 years

Look at the 5 years chart:
SCOMIMR has nothing change, but improving.
Let's do a simple math. Let's target in the next 5 years, what will be the price for SCOMIMR?
We can simply take the highest minus the lowest from the past 5 years chart (2.7 + 0.3) /2 = RM 1.50

Well, the above is just a quick scan through for a pontential good stock. :=)

Uncle picks calculated the Target Price, and the answer is RM1.00

Unclepicks' portfolio. Nothing to shout about. I'm happy with the amount of stocks I am holding. If the market goes uptrend, I am happy with the little gains. US Market just reversed the gain from Thursday, down by -250! Can anyone predict that? A gap down on coming Monday? I guess speculators are now shivering on what to do on Monday. - SARAWAK ENERGY PRIVATISED. Goodbye competitor.

- Dividend 3.5% on 4th December

- Quarter report in 3 weeks time. (Look at the last quarter revenue from Seraya Plant, bought from Termasek Holdings. Last quarter profit faked by 1 time charge, $$$$)

- Price range in between 2.15 to 2.20 since June.

Signs:
1) Current trend: goreng penny stocks & bluechips stay sideline. bad bad bad
2) 7 months rally, without any correction. Super stamina?
3) DOWs struggling to stay above 10,000 pts. Banking sector fragile.
4) Budget 2010 is over. What's next?
5) Thin volume, can't absorb the good news. Not just m'sia, DOWs too!

As said, "Market is always right". When you have plenty of signs that go against you, chances of winning over bursa is slim.

Stay aside. If you have little holding, pick the gems :=)

Take a look at LHH, the chicken king from Muar, Johor. 0.71sen is the lowest recorded this year. I won't hesitate to collect in stages. Impressive earning EPS 7.93 sen for this quarter. (of coz it depends on the Cyclical chicken price). Furthermore, Malaysians are chicken addicts & LHH likes goreng chicken also :=). Look at QSR, KFC, all up high. No worry to buy and hold in stages:

0.950 -> 5000
0.850 -> 5000
0.750 -> 5000

Total, 20,000 units reserved for the chicken king.

p/s: targetting 25% stocks vs 75% cash at this moment.

- Oil and Gas counter. Look at the oil price >$80 per barrel. Oil price will sail along with global economy recovery.
- The company has a better value than Sealink.(Sealink is selling you at higher PE)
- At forward PE 3.5, nothing can go wrong. (unless it's unsustailable)
- 52 weeks high 0.99, low 0.735 (high/low were recorded during IPO time a.k.a. speculative time. Chances of going back to 0.735 is low)

The KLSE rally has lasted too long. Many are waiting for a pullback. With zero holding, putting ~4% into stock is a good start. Buy in stages!
